Artist residency at the Savonnerie du Midi

From 16 September to 12 December 2020, discover Jérémie Setton's exhibition at the Savonnerie du Midi.

After a two-month residency at the Savonnerie, Jérémie Setton, a visual artist from Marseille, decided to work on the material formed in the cauldrons and on the work of our master soap makers: Franck and Wilfried. Thus, several works created between July and September 2020 are exhibited in the cauldron room, highlighting the encounter between the artist and the craftsmen.
7 installations can be discovered during our guided tours of the Soap Factory and the museum on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. (when the museum reopens).

An exhibition and an itinerary imagined as a space exploration in the heart of the vat room:

Visible from the entrance, the astronomical observation telescope reveals, through a set of mirrors, the inside of the vats in which soap is produced. Through the eyepiece, you can observe the colours of this living material: olive green or extra pure beige. The shapeless colour of the soap, whose movement we follow in a video, merges with the material of the paint.

These colours are also deposited on the oars called "retables" used to break the soap crusts that Jérémie Setton has built.

Discover also the full-length portrait made with soapy water of the Hungarian physician Ignace Philippe Semmelweis who was the first to demonstrate the need for doctors to wash their hands, particularly between the dissection of a corpse and childbirth, against the advice of his peers.

Engravings are made throughout the exhibition to capture the alterations to the top caused by the work of the master soap maker.

The gesture of washing hands finally appears in a video which the slowing down transforms into a caress, into a sensual encounter between these two distinct members.

This exhibition is organized by Voyons Voir within the framework of @provence_art_contemporain with the support of the DRAC PACA #dracpaca

It is important for us to share with you anecdotes, secrets and information about the works in our museum at the Savonnerie du Midi.
